Fast-growing global distributor gains scalability and control with Azure

Overview

Established in 1986, Air Business is a market leader in global mail, fulfilment, distribution and subscription management. The company distributes 300 million items a year and has enjoyed growth of 700% under the ownership of An Post, the Irish Post Office. With help from Bytes, Air Business is now able to scale its business successfully using the cloud while keeping on top of costs.

Challenge

Air Business had already used Azure for specific software developments but when the decision was made to move their core infrastructure to Azure they needed help to ensure the base architecture was designed to meet its current business requirements and future growth. Over time, the company was aiming to bring more services into Azure while maintaining control and security of the environment. Managers also wanted to be able to predict Azure spend easily. However, the Air Business team knew they required expert Azure design knowledge to create the right Azure environment quickly. Time was of the essence — on-boarding of a new large client meant that capacity of an on-premise server cluster would not cope and Air Business either had to physically replaced the hardware or bring forward their Azure migration plan, everything had to be in place to meet tight deadlines and ensure the new clients go-live schedule was delivered as promised.

The Bytes Solution

A Senior Air Business manager having been impressed with Bytes expertise in prior engagements and recommended Bytes to the Air business board. Air Business had used Bytes for various licencing arrangement previously and already had a good working relationship with them, however not for such a substantial and core business-critical migration. Very quickly, a conversation began with one of Bytes' virtualisation specialists. Before long, Bytes' partner, EEC joined discussions and the teams hit on the perfect way forward. To meet Air Business's objectives, Bytes moved the company's Azure subscription away from its previous licensing under Enterprise Agreements (EA) — and transferred it to the Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider Program (CSP). This would create significant flexibility with licenses. The Bytes account team also liaised with Bytes' training specialists to make sure existing EA training vouchers didn't go unused.

Benefits

With its new Azure subscription in place, Air Business could get exactly the environment it needed — and in time to deliver its service to an important client. Air Business has been able to move its own infrastructure to the cloud, providing the scalability required to support its plans for growth. At any moment, the company can also use the Bytes Cloud Platform Management (CPM) tool to track and control spending. Now Air Business has opened discussions with Bytes about other areas of its business where the two companies can work together.
