In 2025, one of the largest healthcare AI pilots ever undertaken set out to answer a simple question: could generative AI help NHS staff spend less time on administration and more time delivering patient care?
Working alongside NHS organisations across England, Bytes Healthcare helped deploy and drive adoption of Microsoft 365 Copilot for more than 30,000 users across 90 organisations. The results were significant, with participants reporting average time savings of 43 minutes per day on administrative tasks.
That equates to up to 400,000 staff hours reclaimed each month, creating the potential to release millions of hours annually for higher-value work and patient-facing activities.
The success of the pilot has since informed NHS England's plans to expand Microsoft 365 Copilot to more than 500,000 clinicians and support staff, making it one of the largest AI deployments in healthcare globally.
Proving the Value of AI in Healthcare
The pilot demonstrated how Microsoft 365 Copilot can help staff across a wide range of clinical, operational and administrative roles reduce workload and improve productivity.
From summarising meetings and drafting communications to analysing information and supporting reporting activities, Copilot enabled users to complete routine tasks more efficiently and focus more time on delivering care, supporting patients and making informed decisions.
The findings indicated that AI-powered assistance could save the equivalent of almost five working weeks per employee each year. Beyond productivity gains, the programme also highlighted opportunities to improve administrative consistency, service responsiveness and decision-making, reinforcing AI's role as an enabler of better service delivery as well as operational efficiency.
The Role of Bytes: Driving Adoption Through FastTrack/Turning Technology into Adoption
The pilot demonstrated an important lesson: technology alone does not deliver transformation. Success depends on adoption.
As a trusted Microsoft partner, Bytes Healthcare played a key role in helping participating organisations move beyond deployment and realise measurable value from Copilot. Through our FastTrack service, we worked closely with NHS organisations to prepare environments, build user confidence and embed AI into everyday workflows.
Our support included:
By combining technical readiness with practical user training and local advocacy, organisations were able to accelerate adoption and achieve value more quickly. Rather than becoming another technology initiative, Copilot became a practical assistant embedded into day-to-day work.
Why Organisations Choose Bytes for Copilot Adoption
Successful AI adoption at scale requires more than technology expertise. It demands experience in change management, governance, user enablement and value realisation.
Bytes Healthcare combines deep Microsoft expertise with extensive experience supporting public sector and healthcare organisations through large-scale transformation programmes.
As a Microsoft Inner Circle Partner for AI Business Solutions 2025/26 and one of Microsoft's leading Copilot partners in the UK, Bytes has supported more than 900 customers and manages over 250,000 Microsoft cloud licences. We have also participated in Microsoft-funded adoption and investment programmes valued at more than £1.6 million, helping organisations accelerate transformation and maximise return on investment.
Our expertise extends beyond Copilot alone. As a FastTrack-certified partner across Microsoft workloads including Azure, Security, Modern Work and Business Applications, we help organisations take a joined-up approach to transformation, combining AI, productivity, security and governance into a single strategy.
Alongside technical delivery, Bytes Healthcare has also worked closely with NHS organisations to build practical AI skills through a series of Copilot Prompt-a-thon events across the UK. These collaborative sessions have helped digital leaders and frontline teams share use cases, develop prompting techniques and build confidence in applying AI to everyday challenges.
From Pilot to National Rollout
The success of the pilot has created a blueprint for wider AI adoption across healthcare.
Under the planned rollout, Microsoft 365 Copilot will be made available to more than half a million NHS clinicians and support staff. The programme aims to reduce administrative burden, improve service delivery and create more time for patient care through AI-enabled productivity.
The deployment will support a broad range of healthcare functions, from ward clerks managing patient discharge processes and rota planning to medical secretaries producing documentation, operational teams managing core services, and leaders creating reports, briefings and organisational analysis.
Organisations will also gain access to Microsoft Copilot Studio, enabling them to build AI-powered agents that automate workflows, support service desks and streamline information requests while maintaining appropriate governance and security controls.
Looking Ahead
The NHS pilot demonstrated that AI transformation is ultimately an adoption challenge, not a technology challenge.
What began as a trial involving 30,000 users has evolved into a national programme bringing Microsoft 365 Copilot to more than half a million NHS staff across England. The lesson for organisations considering their own AI journey is clear: real value comes from combining technology with the right readiness, governance, training and change management.
Through FastTrack and extensive experience supporting Microsoft 365 Copilot adoption, Bytes Healthcare continues to help organisations move from experimentation to measurable impact, turning AI investment into long-term operational value.
