Visibility is not the prize. Performance is.

The Flexera State of ITAM 2026 report provides the market with a valuable mirror. Not always a comfortable one, but an important one.

The report points to a familiar pattern: organisations are buying, adopting, connecting, and automating faster than they can govern. Only 31% report visibility into AI software, 59% say wasted AI spend has increased year-on-year, complete IT asset visibility has fallen to 36% and nearly half were audited in the last year.

Those numbers matter. But the misconception? That more visibility automatically creates more control. It doesn’t.

Visibility tells you the barn door is open. Control decides who owns the horse, where it is going, and why procurement has received three invoices for three different saddles.

That is the challenge at the heart of the upcoming Bytes ITAM Summit, Visibility to Value.

For too long, traditional ITAM has been treated as the corporate attic: useful when someone needs to find an old licence, ignored when the business wants to move quickly. Then AI arrives, SaaS spreads, vendors sharpen their audit pencils, and everyone wonders why the attic has not turned into an operating theatre.

The next step is not more asset administration. It is IT Asset Performance.

ITAP shifts the conversation.

-           Are we paying for assets that perform?

-          Is usage strong enough to justify cost?

-          Who owns the outcome?

-          What changes before renewal?

-          What would an audit expose if it arrived tomorrow morning with a clipboard and a bad attitude?

These are the questions that matter because they move ITAM from passive reporting to active decision-making.

This thinking aligns directly with the foundational principles guiding the presentations at the upcoming Visibility to Value Summit. Visibility remains essential, but it is not the prize. Performance is. ITAM data must evolve into a management system that connects IT, procurement, finance, architecture, and the people using the software. Otherwise, a dashboard becomes a screensaver with opinions.

The Bytes approach is deliberately practical. Use tooling where it measures well. Apply licensing, commercial and process expertise where the picture gets messy. Turn discovery into decisions before the renewal, before the audit, and before wasted spend becomes someone’s budget problem.

The Flexera State of ITAM 2026 Report should not be read as a gloomy annual health check. It is a starting whistle. AI spend, audit pressure and falling visibility are not abstract industry trends, they are performance signals and show where organisations can evolve next.

And if your technology estate cannot prove performance, do not be surprised when the business judges it purely on cost.

To understand what these signals really mean for your organisation, explore the insights uncovered in the Flexera State of ITAM 2026 report, and join Flexera & Bytes at the Visibility to Value Summit on 14th July, in London. It’s your opportunity to move beyond visibility, challenge conventional ITAM thinking, and take the first step towards proving, and improving, performance across your estate.
