Microsoft Unveils Wave 2 of Copilot Innovation: A Leap Forward in AI-Driven Collaboration

Thursday 19th September 2024

Microsoft continues to revolutionise workplace productivity with the launch of Wave 2 of Microsoft 365 Copilot, marking significant advancements in its AI-driven Copilot technology. In a keynote address delivered by CEO Satya Nadella and Corporate Vice President Jared Spataro, the company introduced new features that promise to further integrate AI into the heart of everyday business processes, from document creation to complex data analysis.

The highlight of this latest release is Microsoft’s commitment to transforming Copilot into a true collaborative partner. No longer limited to simple "prompt-and-response" actions, the new Copilot delivers an iterative, intelligent experience that allows businesses to harness their organisational content as a rich database of insights. Here's a breakdown of the major updates in Wave 2:

Copilot Pages: Real-Time Collaboration and Editing

With Copilot Pages, users can now seamlessly pull responses from Microsoft's AI-driven BizChat into their Pages, edit, enhance, and share them with their teams in real time. This feature allows teams to collaborate on content in much the same way as with Word documents, with Copilot providing additional insights and improvements on demand. Copilot Pages can also integrate visualizations and content directly from organizational data, making it a powerful tool for real-time collaboration.

Copilot in Excel: Advanced Analysis with Python

Copilot in Excel is now generally available, with a major new capability: the integration of Python for advanced data analysis. Users can now perform complex tasks such as forecasting, risk analysis, machine learning, and data visualisation—all without needing to write code. By leveraging natural language prompts, Copilot can perform deep, analytical tasks that simplify traditionally complex workflows.

Copilot in PowerPoint: Streamlining Presentation Creation

Copilot in PowerPoint now helps users quickly build a narrative-driven presentation with ease. Using prompts, Copilot creates an outline based on user input, allowing for rapid assembly of slides. The tool even integrates branded templates from an organisation’s SharePoint Asset Library, ensuring presentations are on-brand and enterprise-ready. This upgrade brings a new level of efficiency to building presentations from scratch.

Copilot in Outlook: Prioritized Inbox and Summaries

Microsoft also rolled out new features for Copilot in Outlook, including Prioritize My Inbox, which helps users focus on the most important emails by analysing both message content and the user's role. In addition, Copilot now generates concise summaries of emails, explaining why they were prioritized, and highlighting key insights, making inbox management more efficient and personalised.

Copilot in Teams: Cross-Referencing Meeting Recaps

In an effort to streamline meetings, **Copilot in Teams** can now cross-reference discussions across both chat and voice conversations during meeting recaps. If a user misses key points during a meeting, they can ask Copilot questions, which it answers by scanning the entire meeting dialogue—whether typed or spoken—ensuring no detail is overlooked.

Copilot in OneDrive: Intelligent File Comparison

With the new Copilot in OneDrive, users can now quickly compare up to five documents and receive an easy-to-read summary of the differences. This feature allows users to locate critical information more efficiently, eliminating the need for manual document comparisons and making content management simpler than ever.

Copilot in Word: AI-Powered Drafting and Reference Integration

Copilot in Word continues to evolve, allowing users to seamlessly reference not only Word documents but also PowerPoint slides, PDFs, emails, and even meeting data to inform their writing. It also suggests creative prompts to help users overcome writer's block and produce drafts quickly, fostering a more creative and efficient writing process.

Copilot Agents: Automating Business Processes

A major announcement in Wave 2 is the general availability of Copilot Agents, customisable AI-powered agents that work autonomously in the background to optimize business processes. These agents, ranging from simple prompt-and-response functions to advanced fully autonomous workflows, are fully integrated into tools like BizChat and SharePoint. With the Agent Builder, users can create and customize agents tailored to their specific needs, streamlining business operations and enhancing competitive advantage.

Pushing Boundaries in the AI-Powered Workplace

This second wave of Microsoft 365 Copilot marks a substantial leap in AI-powered collaboration and productivity. By elevating Copilot from a basic assistant to a true partner capable of iterative, intelligent collaboration, Microsoft has once again pushed the boundaries of what AI can accomplish in the workplace.

With these new features, Microsoft aims to position Copilot as an indispensable tool in helping organizations unlock the full potential of their data, streamline workflows, and foster collaboration across teams. To read more, please visit here.
