Microsoft has introduced the world to Dragon Copilot, an AI assistant for Clinical workflows.
Clinicians don’t go into medicine to wrestle with paperwork. Microsoft Dragon Copilot changes that - bringing together proven speech dictation, ambient listening, and healthcare tuned generative AI in one unified, secure workspace that fits right into clinical workflows. It streamlines documentation, surfaces the right information at the right time, and automates the little tasks that add up, so care teams can focus on patients.
Dragon Copilot is a combination of Dragon Medical One (A Voice Dictation tool) and DAX Copilot (enhanced listening capabilities).
Part of Microsoft’s Cloud for Healthcare offering, Dragon Copilot aims to improve patient experience by enabling clinicians to enhance the way they document and interact with patient records.
Let’s dive into this new product!
A high-level summary of this latest Microsoft innovation:
What it is: An extensible AI workspace for clinicians that combines Dragon Medical Grade dictation, ambient note capture, and healthcare adapted genAI.
What it does: Automatically creates clinical notes from patient conversations, supports handsfree dictation, answers clinical queries, drafts letters/summaries, and integrates with leading EHRs.
Why it matters: Reduces documentation time (clinicians save minutes per encounter), improves clinician wellbeing, and enhances patient experience—at scale.
How to license: Two options - Per User (all capabilities) or Flex (frontend speech included; ambient & genAI via Pay As You Go billed to Azure) via either CSP or MCA
Now we understand the basics lets take a deep dive into Dragon Copilot.
What is Microsoft Dragon Copilot?
Dragon Copilot is part of Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare and provides a unified experience across care settings and devices. It’s designed to streamline documentation, surface information, and automate tasks while respecting clinical context and healthcare safeguards. The result is an AI workspace that scales across specialties and integrates with electronic health records.
What does Dragon Copilot offer?
Ambient clinical note creation
Securely captures multiparty, multilingual clinician–patient conversations during the visit and converts them into comprehensive, specialty specific notes—even if you reconnect after being offline.
Realtime voice dictation and control
Dragon grade frontend speech lets clinicians dictate, edit, append, and navigate notes with natural language—handsfree, with medical vocabularies and voice commands honed over decades.
Healthcare tuned generative AI
Ask for a referral letter, after visit summary, or encounter summary; get structured outputs you can review and sign off. Dragon Copilot also helps retrieve relevant clinical context (e.g., meds, family history) without clicking away.
Built in governance and scale
Delivered on Microsoft’s secure, modern architecture with healthcare adapted safeguards and admin controls in Dragon admin centre - so you can configure at org, unit, or user level.
The problems it solves (and the outcomes that matter)
Documentation burden & burnout – By capturing the story as it happens and summarizing it into structured notes, Dragon Copilot helps cut time spent documenting, supporting clinician wellbeing. Microsoft field data reports ~5 minutes saved per encounter (on average) and improved work-life balance. Patients also perceive clinicians as more personable.
Fragmented tools across the care journey – Historically, dictation and ambient solutions lived apart. Dragon Copilot unifies frontend speech, ambient capture, and genAI so clinicians can choose the right modality for the moment.
Throughput, access & revenue integrity – Faster, higher quality documentation improves throughput (more appointments), reduces denials, and supports timely reimbursement—helping provider organizations improve the patient experience and their financial outcomes.
Availability
Dragon Copilot is generally available in the United Kingdom and Ireland now! — with additional European markets to follow.
How to license Dragon Copilot
You can choose the model that suits your rollout strategy and usage patterns:
Option 1 — Dragon Copilot Per User
A single peruser license that includes all capabilities—frontend speech, ambient note capture, and healthcaretuned generative AI—across web, desktop, mobile, and embedded experiences. Best for broad access across a clinician population.
Option 2 — Dragon Copilot Flex
A per user license that includes frontend speech for everyone, while ambient & genAI features run Pay As You Go. Usage is metered and billed to your Azure subscription; admins can enable features per user and manage budget limits/alerts via Azure Cost Management. Best for phased adoption and variable usage.
How to buy: Currently Customers can purchase these via an MCA (if applicable) or CSP through Bytes. Due to the nature of Public Sector, an MCA may not always be possible. Please work with Bytes to flesh out your options.
Choosing the right model: quick guidance
Enterprise-wide standardization (low variance in use): choose Per User for simplicity and predictable budgeting.
Pilot/gradual expansion (variable use across specialties or sites): choose Flex, enable ambient/genAI on targeted groups, and cap/control costs in Azure.
Final Wrap-Up & What Should You Do Now?
Dragon Copilot gives clinicians more time for patients - and organisations the ability to scale that benefit across services and sites. Whether you choose Per User for simplicity or Flex for controlled expansion, there’s a path that fits your adoption plan.
